During an expedition aboard the research vessel David Packard, researchers from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute observed a bigfin squid, marking the first live sighting of this elusive creature
in the northeast Pacific Ocean. The encounter occurred two miles deep, with the underwater vehicle coasting above the ocean floor, when the pinkish creature swam into view. Postdoctoral researcher Olívia Soares Pereira identified the rare Magnapinna squid by its characteristic 'elbow.' This sighting is one of only about 70 observations or collections of the bigfin squid ever recorded, highlighting the rarity and mystery surrounding this deep-sea species.
