What's Happening?
Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), in collaboration with Google, Rewiring America, and other partners including Carrier Global Corporation, Tesla, Sunrun, Renew Home, Demand Side Analytics, and encoord, has launched SHARE (Smart Home Assets for Reliability
and Efficiency). This virtual power plant (VPP) initiative aims to deploy a coordinated network of home batteries, smart devices, and battery-enabled heat pumps in communities around the San Francisco Bay Area. The VPP is designed to reduce energy use during periods of high demand, thereby creating additional capacity, supporting grid reliability, and helping to lower electricity rates. SHARE is a proof-of-concept that combines the enrollment of existing home energy devices with the regional deployment of privately funded new electrification technologies to address rising electric demand.

This initiative is critical for California's energy future, as electric demand continues to rise across the U.S. due to increased reliance on electricity for businesses, vehicles, homes, and buildings. SHARE offers a complementary, near-term pathway to enhance grid capacity and reliability by investing directly in homes, alongside traditional transmission and distribution investments. By orchestrating distributed energy resources, the VPP can provide flexible capacity to the grid, especially during peak demand periods, which can help prevent blackouts and stabilize energy costs. This model also empowers consumers by allowing them to manage their energy consumption more intelligently and earn rewards for participating, fostering a more resilient and efficient energy ecosystem. The collaboration between a utility, tech giants, and renewable energy providers sets a precedent for innovative solutions to energy challenges.
What's Next?
PG&E, in partnership with Tesla, Sunrun, and Renew Home, will begin enrolling nearly 21,000 existing flexible energy devices into the SHARE program. Carrier will serve as the launch partner for new deployments, providing battery-enabled heat pump solutions. Eligible customers in Santa Clara and Alameda counties will have the opportunity to receive new Carrier high-efficiency, battery-enabled heat pumps, aiming for lower monthly energy bills and improved home resilience. The VPP is expected to begin supporting the grid as early as fall 2026, with initial findings from the program anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027. The program, fully funded by Google for customer incentives and technology deployment, is designed to run through 2027 and could potentially expand beyond residential customers to include commercial, industrial, and utility-scale applications.
