What's Happening?
Two previously unknown organ pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach have been added to his catalogue, discovered by musicologist Peter Wollny in the Royal Library of Belgium. These chaconnes were played for the first
time in over three centuries at Leipzig's St Thomas Church. The compositions were linked to Bach through his pupil Salomon Günther John, who studied under Bach in the early 1700s. The works demonstrate Bach's early virtuosity and stylistic features.
Why It's Important?
The discovery of these compositions adds depth to the understanding of Bach's early work and influences. It highlights the ongoing efforts of musicologists to uncover historical pieces that enrich the cultural heritage of classical music. This event underscores the importance of preserving and studying historical manuscripts, offering insights into the evolution of musical styles and techniques.
