What's Happening?
Friendship Bench DC, an initiative by HelpAge USA, provides mental health support by having older adults, referred to as 'grandparents,' sit on benches throughout Washington, D.C., to listen to individuals in need of someone to talk to. This program,
inspired by a model from Zimbabwe, aims to reduce mental health stigma and provide a safe space for sharing. Since its launch in June 2024, the program has conducted nearly 700 sessions, offering a peer-based approach to mental health intervention without cost or insurance requirements.
Why It's Important?
The Friendship Bench DC program addresses mental health needs in a non-traditional, community-based manner, which can be particularly effective in reducing stigma associated with seeking mental health support. By leveraging the wisdom and empathy of older adults, the program fosters intergenerational connections and strengthens community ties. This approach can serve as a model for other cities looking to enhance mental health support through innovative, accessible means, potentially reducing the burden on traditional mental health services.
What's Next?
Friendship Bench DC plans to expand its reach by adding more locations and increasing the number of participating 'grandparents.' The program aims to enhance its impact by situating benches in areas with limited mental health resources. As the initiative grows, it may inspire similar programs nationwide, promoting mental health awareness and support through community engagement.
