His coaching career began in the Rays' minor league system, where he held various positions, including hitting coach for Triple-A Durham. Timmons' professional playing career spanned 16 seasons, including time in Major League Baseball with teams such as the Chicago Cubs and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
