What's Happening?
Participants of the REAL Montana program, a leadership initiative by Montana State University Extension, recently traveled to Morocco to gain insights into global agricultural practices. The program aims to develop future leaders in Montana's natural
resource industries by exposing them to diverse perspectives through in-state seminars, national policy trips, and international study tours. In Morocco, participants visited farms and food production facilities, learning about the global food system and the role of Montana agriculture in it. They observed similarities in challenges faced by producers, such as drought and labor shortages, despite the geographical differences.
Why It's Important?
The REAL Montana program plays a vital role in preparing the next generation of leaders in agriculture and natural resources. By providing participants with a global perspective, the program enhances their understanding of international markets and challenges, which is crucial for addressing local issues effectively. This exposure helps participants appreciate the interconnectedness of global food systems and the significant role Montana plays in feeding the world. The program's focus on leadership development is essential for ensuring that Montana's agriculture sector remains competitive and resilient in the face of global challenges.
What's Next?
As the current class of REAL Montana prepares to graduate, the focus will shift to applying the lessons learned from the Morocco trip to local contexts. Participants are expected to leverage their new insights to drive positive changes in their communities and industries. The program is currently accepting applications for its next cohort, with scholarships available to make participation more accessible. This initiative aims to continue building a network of informed leaders who can contribute to the advancement of Montana's natural resource industries.
