Dengue virus cases in Hillsborough County, Florida, have almost doubled, reaching 95 cases between August 30 and September 5, up from 59 cases the previous week. Gabriela Henderson, community relations coordinator for Hillsborough County Mosquito Management,
stated that this is the worst dengue situation in decades. Adriane Rogers, executive director of the Pasco County Mosquito Control District, attributed the surge to recent heavy rainfall and high mosquito production, combined with increased outdoor activities during holidays like July 4th and Labor Day. The Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary carrier of the dengue virus, has been identified in positive mosquito pools within the area. In response, a regional effort involving helicopters from Pasco County Mosquito Control is underway to spray central Tampa, targeting areas from Busch Boulevard to San Miguel Street and Manhattan Avenue to 50th Street, including neighborhoods like Seminole Heights, Ybor City, West Tampa, and Palma Ceia. The aerial application uses liquid Bti, a naturally occurring bacterium that is safe for people, pets, and the environment.
