What's Happening?
Chichester District Council has allocated £35,000 to preserve a rare Roman lead coffin lining from the 4th Century, currently displayed at The Novium Museum in Chichester. This artifact, unearthed in 1985 during excavations of a late Roman cemetery outside the Roman Walls, is one of only a few hundred found in Britain. The council's investment will ensure the conservation of this historical piece for future generations. Additionally, the museum will receive an extra £45,000 to enhance its Roman Gallery with improved audio-visual experiences and interactive interpretations for visitors.
Why It's Important?
The preservation of the Roman coffin lining is significant as it represents a rare piece of Britain's ancient history, offering insights into Roman burial practices and the historical landscape of the region. The investment not only safeguards this artifact but also enhances the educational and cultural value of The Novium Museum, potentially increasing tourism and educational opportunities in Chichester. By improving the museum's facilities, the council aims to attract more visitors, thereby boosting local economic activity and fostering a deeper appreciation of the area's rich historical heritage.
