What's Happening?
The City of Bozeman's Floodplain Administrator is reviewing a floodplain development permit application submitted by Hyalite Engineers, PLLC, on behalf of Landern West, LCC. The project involves an underground utility crossing at 705 South Church Street,
which will pass beneath the floodplain and floodway of Bozeman Creek. The installation will use directional boring to place a bore-and-sleeve carrying two private sanitary sewer service lines beneath the creek. These lines will connect to a public sanitary sewer main on the opposite side of the creek. The project is designed to comply with Bozeman's floodplain regulations, ensuring that the bore path is buried at a depth twice that of the calculated scour depth for a 100-year flood event. Erosion control measures will be implemented to protect the creek during construction, and all disturbed areas will be re-stabilized post-completion. Public comments on the permit application are invited until March 23, 2026.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it addresses infrastructure needs while ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations. The project aims to enhance utility services for future townhomes, potentially boosting local real estate development. By adhering to floodplain regulations, the project minimizes environmental impact and mitigates flood risks, which is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and protecting property in flood-prone areas. The public review process allows community members to voice concerns or support, ensuring transparency and community involvement in local development decisions.
What's Next?
The City of Bozeman will continue to review public comments and assess the project's compliance with floodplain regulations. If approved, the project will proceed with construction, following the outlined erosion control and safety measures. The outcome of this permit application could influence future infrastructure projects in flood-prone areas, setting a precedent for balancing development with environmental stewardship.
