AfricaRice Genebank Secures Long-Term Funding to Preserve Rice Diversity

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) has entered into a long-term partnership with the Crop Trust to secure financial support for its genebank operations in Côte d’Ivoire. This agreement, funded through the Crop Trust Endowment Fund, aims to conserve and utilize rice diversity across Africa. The genebank holds Africa's largest rice collection, including Asian, African, and wild rice varieties. The partnership will enhance the efficiency of genebank activities and increase the availability of rice diversity to researchers and farmers. AfricaRice will leverage artificial intelligence to manage seed information and optimize seed regeneration schedules. This initiative is crucial as rice is a dietary staple in 40 African countries, with demand rising due to population growth and urbanization.
