NASA's Office of STEM Engagement has selected Georgia Tech to lead a $10.5 million initiative aimed at combating the shortage of skilled technicians in the aerospace industry. Elaine Ho, NASA's associate administrator for STEM engagement, emphasized the urgent
need for workers in critical roles such as welding and machining. This partnership, which includes six other institutions, seeks to train students who may not pursue traditional four-year degrees, providing them with faster pathways into these high-demand jobs. The program will offer courses leading to short-term certificates and associate degrees through collaborations with the Technical College System of Georgia, Georgia Southern University, and industry partners. Stephen Ruffin, interim chair of Georgia Tech's School of Aerospace Engineering, highlighted that the program will leverage Georgia Tech's manufacturing pilot facility for hands-on education and will also provide internships in space-related industries. The initiative also aims to reskill existing industry workers in new technologies like advanced manufacturing and AI-enabled manufacturing.
