What's Happening?
The Southern Transitional Council (STC), backed by the United Arab Emirates, is currently in control of Aden and surrounding areas in Yemen. The STC leader, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, is reportedly planning to travel to Saudi Arabia, which may indicate a move
towards resolving the ongoing conflict between the UAE-backed separatists and Yemen's Saudi-backed internationally recognized government. This conflict has caused a significant rift between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, originally allies against the Iran-aligned Houthis, who remain a dominant force in Yemen. The Houthis took control of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, in 2014, prompting Gulf countries to intervene in support of the recognized government, leading to a division of control within Yemen. Recently, government forces, with the aid of Saudi airstrikes, regained control of the strategically important Hadramout and Mahra provinces in eastern Yemen.
Why It's Important?
The potential visit of STC leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi to Saudi Arabia could mark a significant step towards peace in Yemen, a country that has been embroiled in conflict for years. The ongoing feud between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, both key players in the region, has complicated efforts to stabilize Yemen. A resolution could lead to a more unified approach against the Houthis and potentially restore some semblance of order in the region. The conflict has had devastating humanitarian impacts, and any progress towards peace could alleviate the suffering of millions of Yemenis. Additionally, a resolution could strengthen the coalition against the Houthis, potentially altering the balance of power in Yemen.
What's Next?
If the STC leader's visit to Saudi Arabia proceeds, it could pave the way for negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict between the separatists and the internationally recognized government. Saudi Arabia has already extended invitations to southern factions for talks, indicating a willingness to mediate and find a solution. The outcome of these discussions could influence the future political landscape of Yemen and the broader Gulf region. Stakeholders, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, will likely continue to play pivotal roles in shaping the peace process and determining the future governance of Yemen.
