A recent study has highlighted a significant disparity in conservation assessment and legal protection for arthropods in the United States compared to other animal groups. Researchers found that nearly 88.5% of described insects and arachnids in North
America lack conservation assessment by NatureServe, a widely used database for policy decisions. Even among the small subset of assessed and at-risk arthropods, a striking 94.7% are not protected by any state or federal endangered species law. This contrasts sharply with birds, where 27.7% of at-risk species have nationwide protection under the federal Endangered Species Act. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicates that taxonomic biases exist, with certain arthropod orders like mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies being well-assessed as water-quality bioindicators, but not necessarily protected. Conversely, more 'charismatic' species like butterflies and moths receive more legal protection, suggesting that public appeal often outweighs scientific data in driving conservation efforts.
