A recent study conducted at Kagoshima University Hospital has identified a significant correlation between peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and clinical outcomes in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a rare condition characterized
by increased pulmonary arterial pressure, which can lead to right heart failure. The study involved 85 untreated patients diagnosed with PAH between July 2005 and July 2024. These patients were divided into two groups based on their PEFR levels: preserved and reduced. The research found that those in the reduced PEFR group had a significantly shorter 6-minute walk distance and a lower cumulative event-free rate, indicating poorer prognosis. The study suggests that PEFR, which can be easily measured through respiratory function tests, is associated with skeletal muscle mass and can serve as a prognostic tool for PAH patients.
