What's Happening?
The Obuasi Trade Show is set to return from December 17 to 20, featuring its most ambitious program since its inception in 2019. The event, held at Black Park near Len Clay Sports Stadium, aims to strengthen
local businesses and boost the economy of the Obuasi municipality. The show is organized in partnership with the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Obuasi East District Assembly, and Akrofuom District Assembly, with strategic support from AngloGold Ashanti and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA). This year marks GEPA's first involvement, which is expected to enhance exhibitors' branding, packaging, and export readiness. The trade show has evolved into a comprehensive economic development platform, providing training, market access, and business networking opportunities. Since its inception, the show has trained over 1,000 businesses, created 1,049 jobs, and established 168 new businesses.
Why It's Important?
The Obuasi Trade Show plays a crucial role in diversifying the local economy, which has historically relied on gold mining. By fostering small business development and providing access to international markets, the show helps reduce economic vulnerability and promotes long-term prosperity. The involvement of financial institutions aims to improve access to capital for small businesses, further supporting economic growth. The initiative serves as a model for other mining companies in Ghana, demonstrating how extractive industries can contribute to local economic development beyond direct employment and royalty payments. The trade show's success highlights the potential for similar initiatives to strengthen economic resilience in other regions.
What's Next?
The 2025 edition of the Obuasi Trade Show promises expanded activities, including business development workshops, product innovation competitions, and networking sessions. Organizers plan to connect entrepreneurs with potential investors and buyers, enhancing the show's impact on local businesses. The participation of creative arts personalities and media representatives is expected to boost promotional efforts and public engagement. As the event approaches, local authorities and organizers will continue to encourage community participation to maximize the trade show's benefits. The ongoing support from AngloGold Ashanti and other stakeholders will be crucial in achieving the exhibition's objectives of economic diversification and local enterprise development.
