What's Happening?
The European Space Agency (ESA) and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) have forged a partnership to assist countries in leveraging satellite data for sustainable development initiatives. This collaboration aims to bridge the gap
between advanced satellite Earth Observation (EO) tools and decision-makers in nations that can benefit most from them. Satellite EO data offers crucial insights for monitoring floods, tracking changes in forests and farmlands, urban mapping, coastal protection, and disaster preparedness, becoming increasingly vital amidst climate change, rapid urbanization, and growing development needs. ESA contributes its technical expertise, satellite data services, and nearly two decades of experience through its Global Development Assistance program, now part of ESA’s new Earth Action program. UNOSSC, with its mandate to promote South-South and triangular cooperation, connects countries with knowledge, expertise, and practical solutions through platforms like South-South Galaxy+. The partnership began by soliciting input from Member States, with 28 countries responding, primarily focusing on coastal and marine economies, urban growth and infrastructure, and disaster risk reduction.

The ESA-UNOSSC partnership is entering its next phase, which involves further engagement with participating countries to refine their specific requirements and identify areas for knowledge exchange and joint activities. Colombia, Guatemala, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mauritius, and Türkiye have been selected for initial pilot activities. A key upcoming opportunity is the launch of the Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation in September 2026, coordinated by UNOSSC, where ESA is expected to become a partner, making its EO expertise more accessible. Future plans include expanding training and learning opportunities in Earth Observation, sharing case studies and data through South-South Galaxy, developing new pilot projects based on country requests, and strengthening partnerships with other UN agencies and development banks. The partners are also exploring a Joint Innovation Challenge to co-design EO solutions and aim to secure long-term financing for integrating satellite-based tools into national planning.
