The World Economic Forum (WEF) has issued a warning about the increasing use of deepfake technologies, particularly face-swapping tools, which are being used by malicious actors to bypass know-your-customer (KYC) and remote verification processes. According
to a report from the WEF's Cybercrime Atlas, these technologies pose significant financial, operational, and systemic risks to institutions that rely on digital trust. The report highlights that criminals are combining AI-generated or stolen identity documents with advanced face swaps and camera injection techniques to circumvent live verification systems. Researchers analyzed 17 face-swapping tools and eight camera injection tools, finding that some of these tools can defeat traditional digital KYC protections. The report also notes that while most attacks still show detectable inconsistencies, such as temporal synchronization and lighting issues, these weaknesses can be targeted by advanced detection models.
