What's Happening?
The Two Moors Pine Marten Project has reintroduced pine martens to Somerset, releasing 19 individuals at secret locations on Exmoor. The initiative aims to restore balance to local woodlands, where pine martens were
once a critical part of the ecosystem. Concerns about their impact on small mammals and birds have been addressed, with experts explaining that pine martens primarily feed on fruit and small mammals like voles, and are unlikely to threaten nesting birds.
Why It's Important?
Reintroducing pine martens is a significant step in ecological restoration, aiming to enhance biodiversity and support woodland health. This project can benefit red squirrels, which are adapted to coexist with pine martens, potentially reducing the population of invasive grey squirrels. The initiative underscores the importance of preserving natural habitats and the role of keystone species in maintaining ecological balance.
