What's Happening?
The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, the first international exposition dedicated to islands, is scheduled to run for 61 days from September 5 to November 4, 2026, in Yeosu, South Korea. This event aims to highlight Yeosu's 365 islands and diverse island cultures
from around the globe. Unlike traditional expos, this is an experiential, travel-oriented event encouraging visitors to explore actual islands. The main venue in Dolsan's Jinmo district will feature cutting-edge exhibitions, including a 3D media facade structure called Theme Island, showcasing the past, present, and future of islands. Future Island will display urban air mobility (UAM) aircraft and hydrogen-powered vessels, while Treasure Island will offer interactive missions and augmented reality adventures for families. Cultural performances from 16 countries will be held at an outdoor venue, and Restaurant & Market Island will offer diverse culinary experiences from various islands.
Why It's Important?
This expo represents a significant effort to promote island cultures and sustainable tourism on a global scale. By focusing on experiential travel, it encourages a deeper engagement with the unique environments and traditions of islands, potentially setting a new standard for international expositions. The event's emphasis on future island transportation, such as UAM and hydrogen-powered vessels, highlights advancements in sustainable technology and infrastructure that could be adopted by island communities worldwide. Economically, the expo is expected to boost tourism and local businesses in Yeosu, with substantial transportation and accommodation rebates offered to visitors. This model could serve as a blueprint for other regions looking to revitalize their economies through cultural and environmental tourism, while also addressing the challenges and opportunities faced by island nations in the context of climate change and technological innovation.
