What's Happening?
A new shower design at the University Health Network’s Toronto Rehab University Centre aims to improve the care experience for dementia patients. The design incorporates biophilic elements, such as wood and natural colors, to create a calming atmosphere.
It also features accessibility enhancements like slip-resistant flooring, soft lighting, and a spacious layout. The project, led by Dr. Andrea Iaboni, was developed through a collaborative process involving architects, healthcare professionals, and individuals with dementia caregiving experience.
Why It's Important?
This innovative design addresses common challenges in dementia care environments, such as disorientation and stress during showering. By creating a more serene and patient-centered space, the design improves the quality of care and supports the dignity and comfort of patients. The project highlights the importance of human-centered design in healthcare facilities, which can significantly enhance patient experiences and outcomes.
