What's Happening?
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) plays a central role in coordinating climate observations and services globally. Working in conjunction with the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the WMO aims
to integrate climate data into decision-support tools. Historically, the global climate data value chain has faced fragmentation, with data production not always aligned, standards inconsistently applied, and information not effectively translated into actionable decisions. The iClimateAction project, a Horizon Europe initiative, is specifically designed to address this structural problem by strengthening coordination, harmonization, and interoperability of data across these institutions. This collaborative effort seeks to shift from mere data production to data integration, from global observation to national application, and from scientific outputs to practical decision-support tools, as demonstrated by a pilot project in the Maldives.

The WMO's efforts to coordinate climate data are crucial for enhancing the United States' and global capacity to understand, predict, and adapt to climate change. What's Next?
The iClimateAction project, exemplified by the Maldives demonstrator, will continue to develop and refine methodologies for linking Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) with Ecosystem Functional Groups (EFGs). This will enable decision-makers to understand ecosystem vulnerability to climate change and identify where nature-based solutions can strengthen resilience. The methodology developed in the Maldives is designed to be transferable to other Small Island Developing States and potentially other vulnerable regions, indicating a future focus on scaling these integrated data approaches globally. The ongoing collaboration between GCOS, GEO, and WMO will aim to make climate data interoperable and information usable, ensuring that climate services are relevant and support concrete actions from ecosystem management to adaptation planning. This will involve continuous technical review, validation, and the integration of local knowledge with global observation systems to produce reliable and actionable climate maps and insights.
