What's Happening?
Janie’s Angels, an organization founded by Angelica Zaragoza, is working to support incarcerated mothers and their families through a partnership with the NBA Foundation and the Dallas Mavericks. The organization aims to provide these mothers with a second
chance to reconnect with their families and reintegrate into their communities after release. Since its inception, Janie’s Angels has hosted annual summer camps and events that offer children a safe space for healing and growth. These camps include activities like horseback riding, canoeing, and arts-and-crafts, designed to help children navigate the challenges they face due to their mothers' incarceration. The NBA Foundation's grant has enabled Janie’s Angels to expand its programming, with hopes of extending its impact beyond Texas to a national level.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Janie’s Angels and the NBA Foundation highlights the importance of supporting families affected by incarceration, particularly focusing on the unique challenges faced by incarcerated mothers. By providing resources and safe spaces for healing, the organization helps to break the cycle of incarceration and foster long-term success for both mothers and their children. This initiative not only aids in personal transformation but also strengthens community ties and promotes social justice. The involvement of prominent organizations like the NBA Foundation and the Dallas Mavericks underscores the significance of corporate social responsibility in addressing societal issues and supporting vulnerable populations.
What's Next?
Janie’s Angels plans to continue expanding its reach and impact, with aspirations to inspire similar initiatives across the country. The organization is actively seeking volunteers for its 2026 summer camp at Camp Grady Spruce in Graford, Texas, particularly male mentors to support children impacted by trauma and incarceration. This expansion could lead to increased awareness and support for incarcerated mothers nationwide, potentially influencing policy changes and encouraging other organizations to adopt similar models of support.
