What's Happening?
The Cyprus Agriculture Ministry has distributed €10.2 million in aid to farmers affected by severe drought conditions. This financial relief was provided to 2,516 applicants who experienced significant losses due to extreme weather, including low rainfall
and high temperatures. The aid is part of a rural development program aimed at supporting both professional and non-professional farmers. The European Commission also approved an additional €3.5 million in aid from the EU agricultural reserve to assist Cyprus in managing the drought's impact.
Why It's Important?
The drought relief is crucial for sustaining agricultural productivity in Cyprus, which has been severely impacted by prolonged dry conditions. The financial aid helps mitigate the economic strain on farmers, ensuring the continuation of agricultural activities and preventing further deterioration of crops. This situation underscores the broader challenges of climate change, as extreme weather events become more frequent, necessitating coordinated efforts at both national and European levels to support affected sectors.
