What's Happening?
A new AI system has been developed to improve the accuracy of tropical cyclone intensity forecasts. The system, known as AIFS-TC, corrects errors in the existing Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System (AIFS) by learning from past data. This approach
significantly reduces the global wind-speed bias in forecasts, enhancing the ability to predict maximum wind speed and minimum central pressure. The system has shown promising results in tests, particularly in predicting rapid intensification events.
Why It's Important?
Improving the accuracy of tropical cyclone forecasts is crucial for disaster preparedness and response. By reducing forecast errors, the AI system can help communities better prepare for severe weather events, potentially saving lives and reducing economic losses. This development underscores the growing role of AI in enhancing weather prediction capabilities, which is vital in the face of increasing climate-related challenges.
