What's Happening?
The University of Kansas (KU) will celebrate its first-generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni with the unveiling of the 2026 'I Am First Too' poster on November 9. The event, hosted by the Center for Educational Opportunity Programs (CEOP) within
the School of Education & Human Sciences, will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Twelve individuals who were the first in their families to attend college will be featured on the poster. Melissa Peterson, acting associate vice chancellor in the Office of Sovereign Partnerships & Indigenous Initiatives and a Diné educator, will deliver the keynote address. Peterson, a first-generation college graduate herself, has been a strong advocate for first-generation, Pell-eligible, and tribal students since 2015. The celebration aims to promote and increase the visibility of first-generation success at KU.
Why It's Important?
The 'I Am First Too' poster unveiling is a significant event for the University of Kansas as it highlights the achievements and contributions of first-generation college students and professionals. This initiative fosters a sense of belonging and pride among a demographic that often faces unique challenges in higher education. By showcasing successful first-generation individuals, KU provides powerful role models and demonstrates its commitment to diversity and inclusion. This recognition can inspire current and prospective first-generation students, reinforcing the message that higher education is attainable and that their experiences are valued. For the broader university community, it raises awareness about the importance of supporting first-generation students and the positive impact they have on the academic and cultural landscape.
What's Next?
Following the poster unveiling, a 'First-Gen Mocktails & Mingle' networking event will be held from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. at the Jayhawk Welcome Center. This event, hosted by KU Alumni and the University Career Center, will connect first-generation students with alumni and professionals to discuss career paths. Students can register through the KU events calendar, while alumni, faculty, and staff can register on the KU Alumni website. These follow-up events aim to provide practical support and networking opportunities, further assisting first-generation students in their academic and professional journeys. The CEOP plans to continue this tradition for many years, fostering a sustained sense of community and support for first-generation Jayhawks.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'I Am First Too' initiative at KU addresses a critical aspect of educational equity and social mobility. First-generation college students often navigate higher education without the familial guidance that many of their peers receive, making support systems and visible role models crucial for their success. By celebrating these individuals, KU not only acknowledges their resilience but also contributes to a broader cultural shift that values diverse educational backgrounds. The networking event further underscores the university's commitment to not just enrollment but also the holistic development and career readiness of its first-generation students. This comprehensive approach can lead to improved retention rates, enhanced academic performance, and ultimately, greater societal impact from these graduates.
