The Phoenix Fire Department has implemented mobile cold plunges as a critical tool for treating individuals suffering from hyperthermia, particularly hikers experiencing heatstroke. Captain Mike Johnson of the Phoenix Fire Department stated that traditional
methods, such as ice packs, were not cooling patients quickly enough. The National Library of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic recognize cold water immersion as the 'gold standard' for exertional heatstroke treatment, emphasizing that rapid cooling significantly reduces the risk of death and organ damage. The mobile cold plunge device, which folds down to a small size, can be easily stored in fire trucks or ambulances. Rescuers unfold and fill the bag with ice and water, then place the patient inside. This method was successfully used to save a hiker on Camelback Mountain on August 16, after she exhibited a core body temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and an 'altered state.' The department began trialing these devices in 2024 and, following successful saves, has now trained crews to use them permanently, making them as commonplace as a First Aid kit during the spring and summer months.
