What's Happening?
The Federal Government has set a target to increase the production of healthcare products to 70% by 2030. Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking Healthcare Value Chain,
announced this at the Scientific Products Association of Nigeria Innovate 2025 Conference and Exhibition in Lagos. The initiative, inaugurated by the President in 2023, aims to transform healthcare manufacturing, strengthen infrastructure, and create jobs in the pharmaceutical sector. Currently, Nigeria imports 70% of its medicines, 99% of medical devices, and all vaccines, which is deemed unsustainable for a country with a population of 250 million. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for self-sufficiency in healthcare products, as the country struggled to secure basic medicines and healthcare tools.
Why It's Important?
Increasing domestic production of healthcare products is crucial for Nigeria's economic and health security. By reducing dependency on imports, the initiative could lead to significant cost savings and improve access to essential medicines and medical devices. This move is expected to create numerous jobs in the healthcare sector, boosting the economy and providing employment opportunities. Strengthening the healthcare infrastructure will also enhance the country's ability to respond to future health crises, ensuring better preparedness and resilience. The initiative aligns with global trends towards self-sufficiency in healthcare, which is increasingly important in the face of global supply chain disruptions.
