What's Happening?
The Solomon Islands Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), supported by the World Bank-funded Solomon Islands Agriculture Rural Transformation (SIART) Project, is empowering 43 young professionals
in the agricultural sector. These individuals have been recruited as junior extension officers to assist Agribusiness Producer Organisations (ABPOs) across various provinces. The program aims to enhance agricultural productivity and market access by providing practical training in areas such as cocoa agronomy, farm management, and post-harvest processing. The initiative is part of a broader effort to build a resilient and sustainable agricultural sector in the Solomon Islands.
Why It's Important?
This empowerment initiative is crucial for the development of the agricultural sector in the Solomon Islands. By training young professionals, the program is creating a new generation of skilled agricultural workers who can contribute to the country's economic growth. The involvement of these professionals in supporting ABPOs is expected to increase farm production and improve market access, thereby boosting the livelihoods of local farmers. Additionally, the program's focus on capacity building and skill development is likely to have long-term benefits for the agricultural sector and the overall economy of the Solomon Islands.
