PPG, in collaboration with SAIC General Motors, has launched a cleaning solvent recycling project aimed at enhancing sustainability in the automotive industry. Announced at the 2025 CARES Conference in Suzhou, China, the initiative introduces a circular economy model for solvents used in automotive painting. This model allows for the reuse of up to 80% of waste solvents collected in OEM paint shops. The project employs advanced distillation and purification technology to repurpose waste solvents as raw materials for coatings or as reclaimed solvents. This closed-loop process significantly reduces hazardous waste and CO2 emissions compared to traditional disposal methods. The initiative is expected to recycle over 430 tons of waste solvents annually, marking a significant step forward in sustainable automotive manufacturing.
