What's Happening?
Nikki von Bülow, an HR consultant, has been volunteering with the CIPD Trust's Rebuilding Futures programme to mentor refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. The initiative aims to help these individuals
integrate into the workforce by providing guidance and support. Von Bülow, who has a background in HR and mediation, was initially anxious about the challenges of mentoring refugees but found the experience rewarding. She worked with Hamza, a civil engineer from Afghanistan, helping him navigate the UK job market. Despite initial barriers, such as the lack of UK experience, Hamza secured a job as a site manager, thanks to von Bülow's mentorship and her professional network.
Why It's Important?
The Rebuilding Futures programme addresses the critical issue of refugee integration, which is a significant challenge in many countries. By leveraging the skills and networks of HR professionals, the programme helps refugees overcome employment barriers, contributing to their economic independence and social inclusion. This initiative not only benefits the refugees but also enriches the mentors' professional and personal lives, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Such programmes can serve as models for other countries seeking to improve refugee integration and highlight the role of HR in driving social change.
