What's Happening?
Utah Valley University (UVU) is broadening its study abroad programs, offering students immersive international experiences that contribute to their academic and personal growth. The Office of Education Abroad at UVU coordinates these programs, providing logistical support and advising for students seeking international, for-credit experiences. Since January, UVU students have traveled to over a dozen countries, including Estonia, Samoa, Japan, and Italy, engaging in diverse fields such as health sciences, literature, and geology. These programs are designed to enhance students' understanding of different cultures and educational systems, as exemplified by Liliana Sessions Oberg, a senior in elementary education, who gained insights into educational practices in Estonia.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of study abroad programs at UVU is significant as it prepares students for a globalized world by fostering intercultural understanding and enhancing language skills. These experiences are crucial in developing students' confidence and broadening their worldviews, which are essential skills in today's interconnected society. The programs also provide practical benefits, such as academic credit and professional networking opportunities, which can be advantageous in the job market. By participating in these programs, students can gain unique perspectives and skills that are not typically available in traditional classroom settings.
What's Next?
UVU plans to continue expanding its study abroad offerings, with new programs for summer 2026 to be announced at the upcoming Study Abroad Fall Expo. This event will provide students with information on application processes, financial options, and program timelines. As these programs grow, more students will have the opportunity to participate in international learning experiences, further enhancing their educational journey and preparing them for diverse career paths.
