What's Happening?
Washington County Public Schools are considering a policy that would require students to keep cell phones and other personal electronic devices stored away for the entire school day. This proposal is part of the Maryland Phone-Free Schools Act, which
mandates local school systems to restrict student use of such devices during the academic day by the 2027-28 school year. However, Washington County plans to implement this policy a year earlier, in the 2026-27 school year. The proposed policy covers devices like cell phones, smart watches, smart glasses, earbuds, and tablets, requiring them to be stored in lockers or cubbies throughout the day. Exceptions would be made for documented medical needs, learning accommodations, approved educational activities, emergencies, or other situations approved by school administrators. The policy would still allow device use on school buses, provided it does not create safety issues or distractions.
Why It's Important?
The proposed policy reflects a growing trend in educational settings to minimize distractions and enhance focus by limiting the use of personal electronic devices. By implementing this policy, Washington County aims to create a more conducive learning environment. This move could set a precedent for other school districts in Maryland and potentially across the U.S., influencing how educational institutions balance technology use with educational priorities. The policy could impact students, parents, and educators by changing how they interact with technology during school hours. It also raises questions about the role of technology in education and how schools can best integrate it without compromising educational outcomes.
What's Next?
The Washington County Board of Education is currently seeking public feedback on the proposed policy changes. Community members are encouraged to review the policy language and share their opinions with the Board's Policy Committee. The public survey will remain open through May 29, allowing stakeholders to voice their concerns or support. The feedback collected will likely influence the final decision on the policy's implementation. If approved, the policy could lead to adjustments in school routines and require students and parents to adapt to new communication norms during school hours.
