What's Happening?
At the DIMDEX 2026 show in Doha, Fincantieri introduced its latest short-range air-defense (SHORAD) system, featuring the Omega360 radar. This advanced radar system is designed for counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) and offers continuous 360-degree
coverage in azimuth and up to 60 degrees in elevation. The Omega360 radar utilizes 192 simultaneous directive beams to track aerial and surface targets, including unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). It boasts high spectrum resolution, enabling detailed target classification and micro-Doppler confirmation. The radar's omnidirectional transmission beam and 192 receiving channels allow for persistent target observation, even down to a 2-degree azimuth beamwidth. The Omega360 radar is developed and produced by a dedicated Fincantieri task force in Rome, marking the company's first self-designed and manufactured radar system.
Why It's Important?
The unveiling of the Omega360 radar system is a significant development in the field of defense technology, particularly in enhancing capabilities against unmanned aerial threats. The system's ability to provide continuous and detailed target tracking offers a strategic advantage in modern warfare, where unmanned systems are increasingly prevalent. The high-resolution capabilities of the Omega360 radar allow for precise identification and classification of targets, which is crucial for effective defense operations. This advancement not only strengthens Fincantieri's position in the defense industry but also contributes to broader efforts to enhance national security through innovative technology solutions.
