A landslide risk dashboard has been implemented in Sitka to alert community members about potential rainfall-initiated debris flows. The dashboard provides current risk levels and forecasts several days in advance. This system calculates hazard levels by
comparing three-hour rainfall amounts, both observed and forecasted by the National Weather Service, with historical conditions known to cause landslides in Sitka. Research indicates that rainfall intensities measured over three-hour intervals are the most effective predictor for landslides in the area, as Sitka's soils drain rapidly, making short, intense rain bursts critical. If moderate or high-risk levels are reached, these levels are maintained for six hours, reflecting that landslides often occur shortly after heavy rainfall. Since 2013, increased monitoring efforts have led to more comprehensive records and awareness of landslides in the community, which may contribute to the perceived increase in events.
