of death of Queen Christina of Sweden, who died in 1689. Their analysis suggests that Queen Christina likely suffered from undiagnosed diabetes, which contributed to a chronic leg wound and subsequent bacterial infection. This infection is believed to have spread, leading to sepsis, which ultimately caused her death at age 62. The researchers reviewed symptoms documented during her lifetime, such as extreme thirst, excessive urination, weight loss, and chronic leg wounds, all consistent with diabetes. They also analyzed findings from her postmortem examination, which, despite a three-day delay, provided crucial clues, particularly regarding a recurring red lesion on her right leg diagnosed as erysipelas, a bacterial skin infection that can lead to sepsis if untreated.
