What's Happening?
GE Aerospace has chosen StandardAero to build, maintain, and overhaul the CT7 engines for the UK's Leonardo AW149 New Medium Helicopter fleet. The CT7-2E1 turboshaft engine will power 23 AW149 helicopters ordered in March as part of the UK's NMH program.
The agreement includes spare engines, parts, and long-term services. StandardAero's facility in Gosport, England, will produce the engines and support future export contracts. This decision aligns with the UK's Social Value Model, emphasizing economic, social, and environmental initiatives. The UK Defense Ministry selected Leonardo's AW149 over Safran Helicopter Engines' Aneto 1K. The helicopters will replace the Royal Air Force's Airbus Puma Mk. 2 and the British Army's AS365 Dauphin fleets, with deliveries starting in 2030.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is significant for the UK's defense capabilities, ensuring the modernization of its helicopter fleet with the AW149. The selection of StandardAero and the use of British facilities support local economic and social goals, potentially boosting the UK's aerospace industry. The decision also reflects strategic choices in defense procurement, favoring domestic production and maintenance capabilities. The AW149's introduction will enhance the UK's military operational readiness and align with broader defense modernization efforts.
What's Next?
The first AW149 helicopter is expected to be delivered in summer 2030, with all units delivered by fall 2033. The UK may explore further export opportunities for the AW149, leveraging local assembly capabilities. The decision may influence future defense procurement strategies, emphasizing local production and maintenance. Stakeholders, including the UK government and aerospace industry, will likely monitor the program's progress and its impact on defense capabilities and economic benefits.
