Biotech company Enveda has announced encouraging results from the first clinical trial of its experimental drug, ENV-308, designed to reduce appetite and mimic some effects of physical activity. The drug aims to replicate the body's natural molecule,
lactate phenylalanine (Lac-Phe, discovered in 2022), which is produced during exercise and signals the brain to decrease appetite. Unlike natural Lac-Phe, which breaks down quickly, ENV-308 is formulated as a daily oral tablet to potentially offer longer-lasting benefits. The Phase 1 clinical trial involved 88 healthy adults and primarily focused on assessing the drug's safety and tolerability across various dosages. Enveda reported that participants tolerated ENV-308 well, noting an "exceptional gastrointestinal safety profile." This is a significant finding, as common weight-loss drugs like GLP-1s (e.g., Ozempic, Wegovy) often cause gastrointestinal side effects, leading many users to discontinue treatment. Additionally, preclinical animal studies indicated that ENV-308 helped preserve lean muscle mass during weight loss and maintained slimmer figures after treatment cessation, addressing other limitations of current weight-loss medications.
