What's Happening?
The 2026 Robert A. Clifford Scholar-in-Residence program will feature Professor Richard Loren Jolly from Southwestern Law School. Scheduled for April 16, 2026, Jolly will present his project on 'The Democratic Virtues of the Civil Jury,' exploring the jury's
role as a democratic institution. The program aims to foster dialogue on civil justice issues, with Jolly's work focusing on the socio-political role of lay participation in judicial decision-making. The event will be held at the DePaul Conference Center in Chicago, offering 1.25 hours of CLE credit. Registration is free and required by April 15th.
Why It's Important?
The Clifford Scholar-in-Residence program highlights the importance of civil justice and the role of juries in democratic participation. Jolly's focus on the civil jury as a democratic institution addresses concerns about the erosion of public trust in legal systems. By examining potential reforms to strengthen lay participation, the program contributes to ongoing discussions about enhancing the fairness and effectiveness of civil adjudication. This initiative supports the development of legal scholarship and encourages dialogue among legal professionals, potentially influencing future legal practices and policies.
