What's Happening?
Seaspan has completed a $140 million investment in a new outfitting pier at its Vancouver shipyards, enhancing its capacity to compete for large navy and coast guard vessel contracts under Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). The new pier, constructed in partnership with Stantec, measures 890 feet by 60 feet and is designed to support heavy outfitting operations. It replaces a six-decade-old timber pier and includes features to withstand future sea level rise, extreme storm surges, and seismic events. The pier is already in use, with the Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS Protecteur being outfitted at the facility.
