individuals, found a direct correlation between a history of painful, blistering, or severe sunburns and a higher likelihood of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Individuals with a medium frequency of severe sunburns had a 51% increased risk of cSCC, while those with high frequencies saw a 69% increase. Frequent severe burns during childhood were linked to a threefold higher risk. The research, led by dermatologist Isaac Weber at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, highlights that UV radiation damage to DNA in skin cells persists long after the visible redness fades, potentially leading to mutations that contribute to cancer development.
