A new peer-reviewed study, led by the nonprofit Food Packaging Forum Foundation, has identified 1,222 chemicals in food-contact materials that pose serious health risks, including cancer and reproductive harm. The research, published in the journal Environmental
Science & Technology, analyzed over 15,000 chemicals used in food processing or packaging. Alarmingly, the study found that for 87% of these chemicals (more than 13,200), there is insufficient publicly available information to assess their risks. Among the hazardous chemicals identified are PFAS 'forever chemicals' used in grease-resistant wrappers, styrene in takeout containers, hormone-disrupting phthalates in flexible plastics, and bisphenol A (BPA) in hard plastics and can linings. These chemicals have been found to leach into various foods and beverages, including infant formula and baby food pouches. Researchers are particularly concerned about babies' exposure, noting that a higher volume of chemicals can migrate into baby food due to the larger packaging-to-food ratio in small servings and the sterilization process using heat, which also forms microplastics.

Furthermore, there's a call to modify material safety rules to ensure products are safe under various use conditions and to expand toxicity screening to include chronic disease outcomes like diabetes and infertility. The study's authors advocate for a shift where products or chemicals are not allowed on the market until companies can prove their safety. This could lead to increased pressure on U.S. regulatory bodies like the FDA to re-evaluate existing policies and demand greater transparency from chemical and food packaging industries regarding the ingredients they use.
