What's Happening?
Public Lending Right International (PLRI) has formalized its status as an international association, becoming a legal entity under Swiss law with headquarters in Geneva. Previously an informal network
since 1995, PLRI supports authors and rightsholders by ensuring they receive payments when libraries lend their works. The association's founding members include European Visual Artists, European Writers' Council, and the International Publishers Association. PLRI aims to facilitate global collaboration among stakeholders and provide technical assistance to countries developing public lending right systems.
Why It's Important?
The formalization of PLRI as an international association marks a significant step in supporting authors and rightsholders globally. By establishing a legal framework, PLRI can more effectively advocate for fair compensation for creators when their works are lent by libraries. This development could lead to improved public lending right systems worldwide, benefiting authors financially and encouraging the creation of new works. Additionally, it fosters international cooperation and the sharing of best practices, strengthening the global literary and creative industries.
What's Next?
PLRI plans to organize a Public Lending Right International Conference in 2026, which will bring together stakeholders to discuss advancements and challenges in the field. This event will provide a platform for exchanging ideas and strategies to enhance public lending right systems globally. As PLRI expands its membership, it will continue to advocate for the rights of authors and rightsholders, potentially influencing policy changes and promoting the importance of fair compensation in the creative industries.
