Arizona is advancing efforts to secure its water future by investing $7 million to study two proposed water projects in California. These projects aim to augment Arizona's water supply, particularly in response to anticipated cuts from its Colorado River
allocation. The Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA) unanimously approved funding for these studies on August 19. One proposal involves investing in California's groundwater storage, allowing a California district with Colorado River rights to draw from that source instead, thereby freeing up Colorado River water for Arizona's Central Arizona Project canal. The second project focuses on upgrading a water treatment plant near San Diego to purify Mexican sewage water to drinking quality, which would then be returned to Mexico in exchange for a portion of its Colorado River treaty right. Arizona is preparing for annual cuts of at least 760,000 acre-feet from its 2.8 million-acre-foot Colorado River allocation, a reduction that reflects a likely agreement among Arizona, California, and Nevada to collectively reduce their water use by 1.25 million acre-feet annually for the next two years.
