What's Happening?
A new National Commission on Learning Ecosystems has been established to explore and enhance collaborative educational strategies that extend learning beyond traditional school environments. This initiative, led by the think tank New America, aims to identify
successful collaboration models between schools, employers, and community organizations such as libraries, universities, and museums. The commission will focus on understanding what makes these partnerships effective and how they can be sustained. The effort is inspired by successful models like Remake Learning in Pittsburgh, which has fostered collaboration among 1,000 organizations since 2007. The commission will study existing ecosystems across rural, urban, and suburban areas to develop recommendations for fostering sustainable educational collaborations.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the National Commission on Learning Ecosystems is significant as it addresses the need for innovative educational strategies in a rapidly changing world. By leveraging community resources, schools can enhance student engagement and learning outcomes, especially in times of tight budgets and uncertain federal funding. These collaborations can also help bridge ideological divides within communities, fostering a more inclusive and supportive educational environment. The commission's work could lead to policy recommendations that encourage place-based collaboration, potentially transforming how education is delivered and experienced across the United States.
What's Next?
In its first year, the commission will focus on identifying successful strategies used by its members and understanding the structure of intermediary organizations that facilitate these collaborations. In the second year, the commission plans to develop recommendations for state and federal policymakers to support and measure the success of these educational ecosystems. This could include infrastructure development to support these collaborations and suggestions for integrating community resources into educational frameworks.
