Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has expanded its Filipino Scholars and Interns on Nuclear Engineering (FISSION) program by deploying a new group of engineers overseas. This initiative aims to bolster local expertise in nuclear energy. Seven engineers currently
employed under Meralco and its subsidiary, Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGen), are participating in this program. They are pursuing advanced degrees in nuclear engineering at prestigious institutions such as Université Paris-Saclay in France, Ontario Tech University in Canada, and KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School in South Korea. The program follows the inaugural batch in 2024, which sent engineers to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States and Harbin Engineering University in China. Participants will also undertake internships with global nuclear technology firms before returning to the Philippines to apply their training. The FISSION program is part of Meralco's broader Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST) initiative, which seeks to explore nuclear power as a reliable, low-carbon energy source.
