What's Happening?
Axiom Space has awarded Redwire a contract to supply solar arrays for the first module of its planned commercial space station. Redwire will provide its Roll-Out Solar Array (ROSA) technology for Axiom's Payload Power Thermal Module (AxPPTM). The AxPPTM module will initially dock with the International Space Station before forming part of Axiom's standalone station. The ROSA technology, originally developed for the ISS, has been successfully used on other spacecraft, including the lunar Gateway.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Axiom Space and Redwire represents a significant step in the commercialization of space exploration. By leveraging proven technologies like ROSA, Axiom aims to ensure reliability and efficiency in its space station operations. This collaboration highlights the growing role of private companies in space infrastructure development, potentially reducing costs and accelerating innovation. The success of Axiom's commercial station could enhance international cooperation and competition in space exploration.
What's Next?
Axiom plans to launch the AxPPTM module to the ISS by late 2027, with further modules to follow. As NASA revises its support for commercial stations, Axiom's development aligns with new policies promoting private sector involvement. The partnership with Redwire may expand to include additional technologies, further solidifying Axiom's position in the commercial space industry.
