What's Happening?
The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has chosen the Saab Giraffe 1X radar to replace its existing Portable Search and Target Acquisition Radar (PSTAR) for low-level air defense missions. This new radar system is designed to improve the detection
of a wide range of aerial threats, including small drones, and will provide crucial short-range surveillance to support army operations. The Giraffe 1X, which operates in the X band, has a detection range of approximately 75 kilometers and can detect small drones at a range of up to 4 kilometers. This is a significant upgrade from the PSTAR, which operates in the L band with a detection range of about 20 kilometers. The radar will be mounted on Spanish-built Uro Vamtac 4 X 4 vehicles, alongside the Saab RBS 70 NG short-range air defense missile system, marking a return to a fully motorized air defense capability for the Singapore Armed Forces.
