What's Happening?
The City of Birmingham's Department of Innovation & Economic Opportunity, in collaboration with Battle Plan Strategic Consulting, has launched the inaugural cohort of the Birmingham Workforce Partner Accelerator (BWPA). This initiative includes five community-based
organizations and small businesses selected to participate in a six-month intensive program. The program aims to enhance workforce development efforts by building, funding, and launching initiatives that serve Birmingham residents. The selected organizations include Down By Law, The Link Workforce Training Center, New Path Health Career Center, Rebirth Community Corporation, and Iron City Iron Works Inc. These organizations were chosen based on their readiness, sector alignment, and commitment to Birmingham's workforce ecosystem. The accelerator covers six workforce sectors, including Information Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Construction Trades, Healthcare, Professional Services, and Transportation & Logistics. The program will culminate in a Demo Day competition on December 9, 2026, where participants will present their programs to city leaders, funders, employers, and community stakeholders.

What's Next?
The accelerator program will run from July to December 2026, during which participating organizations will engage in various activities, including program design, partnership readiness, and grant writing. The culmination of the program will be the Demo Day competition, where organizations will pitch their workforce development programs. Cash prizes totaling $9,250 will be awarded, with the first-place winner receiving $5,000. This event will provide an opportunity for organizations to showcase their initiatives and gain support from city leaders, funders, and community stakeholders. The success of this inaugural cohort could lead to future iterations of the accelerator, further expanding its impact on Birmingham's workforce development landscape.
