Researchers at the University of Southampton have developed a short training program, named DISCERN-AI, designed to help individuals distinguish between real human faces and those generated by artificial intelligence. The 15- to 20-minute training session
is structured in three parts. The first part addresses misleading cues, such as instinctively judging proportionate and familiar faces as more human, which can actually be indicators of AI generation. The second part teaches users to identify useful but often overlooked features, like the polished quality of AI-generated images versus the distinctive traits of real faces. The final section advises trainees to disregard common 'red flags' like smooth skin or smiling, as these are not reliable indicators. A study published in 'Computers in Human Behaviour' demonstrated that this training significantly improved participants' accuracy in identifying AI-generated faces, with effectiveness sustained for at least 20 days.

The proliferation of hyperrealistic AI-generated faces, often referred to as deepfakes, poses significant societal risks, including their use in romance scams, election interference, cyberbullying, and espionage. People are generally poor at identifying these synthetic images, often performing worse than random chance.
