Scott Mortenson, a resident of Oak Park, has been recognized as the 2025 Volunteer of the Year by the Forest Preserve District of Will County. Mortenson, who has been volunteering for six years, was also
awarded the Nature Foundation of Will County's 2025 Restore Will County grant, receiving $500 for supplies and equipment. His involvement began after learning about the district's work from a friend, leading him to participate in a winter tree identification class and eventually earn training certifications. Mortenson's contributions include teaching safety techniques and implementing management plans, which have been crucial in maintaining the preserves. His dedication is evident as he commutes over an hour to volunteer, participating in activities such as removing invasive species to promote native plant growth.
